Earth Day: Use Air, Water, Earth and Fire to Create Flow in your Home

By Brittany Diaz | 5 Min Read

Today is Earth Day. It’s a day to pause and celebrate the special place we get to live. The truth is, we should be thanking and appreciating our beautiful planet more than once a year. Which is why we’ve decided to embrace the celebration of nature in our homes, so that we can do just that, every day. From natural earthy colors, textures, and even shapes, to the feelings nature can evoke - we want to incorporate it all.

A well designed biophilic home can support the mental & physical wellbeing of you and your family by establishing a profound sense of belonging to this planet. Interiors that incorporate the 4 elements - Air, Water, Earth, and Fire - always feel more alive and engaging, reviving our brains’ innate reactions to nature.

Air

Natural air makes an interior feel alive. It’s not by coincidence that we call a space that feels open and flooded with natural light, airy. It has the ability to revive a space.

Which is why we recommend making an open window a daily habit - rain or shine - because it allows a freshness to stream into the space naturally.

If you have the opportunity to renovate your home, considering an indoor-outdoor living space as a way to blur the boundary between inside and outside is a wonderful way to have that fresh, unique feeling all of the time.

Water

Water is gentle, yet resilient. Given enough time, it can carve stone. Both looking and listening to moving water has an incredibly grounding effect on our brains. It provides relief from stress and helps concentration.

Generally speaking, water features aren't that common, but exploring their potential opens plenty of possibilities for wellbeing-centered interiors. For example, incorporating small fountains around a room for a serene water flow sound can not only intensify your sense of calm, but heighten your productivity.

If you have that opportunity to renovate your home, incorporating a larger, more intentional indoor fountain can be a unique addition to the aesthetic and overall flow of your home.

Earth

At Collov, we’ve had a longstanding obsession and admiration for earth. It is our safe haven. We aim to become more grounded when we’re feeling unsettled, stressed or anxious. So it makes sense that we’d want to incorporate elements of grounding earth inside our safe haven to make our home that safe space to detox and relax.

Tactile surfaces, greenery, and other rich textures are all earthy elements in interiors that go way beyond an aesthetic appeal. Earthy features engage the most ancestral of our senses - touch - and therefore balance our modern world with nature’s lasting impact. So don’t be afraid to incorporate sculptures, light fixtures, and surfaces that use stone, clay, wood, and even crystals like marble and quartz.

Fire

Fire is wild energy.  Its heat makes winter nights cozier.  Fire is light that shines in the dark and its appeal is unique and timeless. So much so that a fireplace is still the most requested focal point in living rooms, and becoming the latest trend  in bedrooms. We support lighting candles as a common ritual that brings in this warm and tranquil, yet balancing wild energy.

And with new technologies in fireplaces multiplying, making the charm of fire in your living space is becoming more and more accessible.
