In the age of AI, we’ve got the inside scoop on the future of interior design.
These days, there’s no shortage of news about Generative AI. Some industries are dominated by praise and excitement for how AI can make life easier, including the interior design industry. In July, Wayfair unveiled a generative AI solution, Decorify, to reimagine interior design.
Now Walmart is joining this game. Walmart is developing an interior design assistant for customers to decorate their rooms. Users can upload a photo of a room, and it will then take an image capture of every item that’s in the space. Customers ask the chat assistant for advice on how they should redecorate, and the AI places items in the room that they suggest.
“Generative AI technology is a priority for the company,” said the Walmart spokesperson.
Generative AI is the term for any artificial intelligence that can come up with new text or images in response to human prompts. You’ve likely heard of ChatGPT, a text-based generative AI. Type in a prompt such as, “Write an email that explains interior design,” and ChatGPT will spit out a message complete with a subject line, greeting, description of the design style, etc.
There are many uses for ChatGPT, but the renowned computer scientist Andrew Ng predicted that the AI text revolution that has taken place in recent years is about to come to images in a recent keynote talk at the AI Hardware Summit. Interior design will be a good use case.
It’s like having a virtual design assistant who can generate a wide range of design options for you. For example, a generative AI model can be trained on a dataset of images of houses, rooms, and design styles, and then be able to generate new images of houses that look like they could be real. It can also be trained on a dataset of floor plans and generate new plans that are functional and efficient. It’s amazing how these models can take the style and preferences of homeowners into consideration and come up with new design options that suit their tastes.
The interior design process, often an intricate dance of creativity and strategy, gets a novel partner in AI, automating and innovating through data and nature language analysis, pattern recognition, and content generating (renderings or images).
For interior designers and homeowners, a generative AI tool, such as Collov AI, expands their source of inspiration. By simply uploading a photo, specifying what room it represents, and choosing from one of more than 30 design styles, the AI tool provides a multitude of ways to see a space from a fresh perspective without the need to mock up designs or rearrange furniture.
Furthermore, the main tasks performed by interior designers are not only finding new and innovative ideas but also understanding the spaces they are designing for, the constraints, and the customer requirements. A potent generative AI tool becomes invaluable when it masterfully balances maintaining structural integrity with sparking creativity, enabling designers to seamlessly integrate customer-specific modifications, enhancing the co-creation experience.
As we envision a future where Generative AI holds a pivotal role in interior design, the collaboration between human ingenuity and artificial intelligence stands out as the cornerstone. It is not a tale of AI superseding or replacing human designers, but a narrative where AI becomes an intrinsic tool, amplifying the designer’s capacity to create spaces that are profoundly personalized, sustainably optimized, and universally delightful.
That is the future Collov AI is creating!
